Descrizione del progetto
The General Directorate for the school Ordinances and Autonomy in collaboration with the British Council in Italy and the regional school office launched the project IBI / BEI – Bilingual Education Italy in 2010. The initial project involved six primary schools in the Lombardy region and we were one of them.
The bilingual education, conveyed in English, gives children a preparation for living in a world where English, becomes a basic skill useful to interact with other cultures . The systematic exposure to a second language at school age can lead to bilingualism more easily than during adolescence or adulthood.
For five years the pupils at one of our Primary Schools studied Art, Science and Geography in English, for a total of six hours weekly.
The teaching materials were tailored to the needs of children, perhaps simplified from a linguistic point of view but not from the content point of view. Various learning modes were used like storytelling, role playing, group work and problem solving.
Most parents decided to enroll their children in a school involved in the project to provide the opportunity for their children to enter prematurely in full contact with a second foreign language and to give them a greater open mind.
The most developed language skills remain the oral ones, with a significant role for listening and speaking.
The project has had a positive impact on the language skills of students and a direct influence on teaching methods.
This year, those pupils who participated in the project for five years in primary school, arrived in lower secondary school. And a new project along those lines was initiated, The CLIL Excellence Project.
Clil – Content and Language Integrated Learning is not intended to teach a foreign language, it is the integrated learning of language and content.
The language is learned through the content and the content is taught and learned through the language simultaneously. The vehicular learning leads to a linguistic and communicative competence higher than the traditional methods.
CLIL helps develop intercultural communication skills, improves language and oral communication skills, increases motivation, develops multilingual interests and attitudes.
First class pupils this year are studying a topic of Science, Geography, Technology (ICT), or P.E in English using this method.
